Certificate Course on Personal Security for Humanitarians
Course Overview
Security is very important for humanitarian projects to succeed. People who work as humanitarians are frequently exposed to insecure environments due to lawlessness, political instability and armed conflict. Humanitarian workers should be aware of their own personal safety whether ‘working in a hostile or relatively safe situation. For those reasons there is a compelling need for them to be completely prepared for any potential dangers that they might encounter in their line of duty, as well as general difficulties and pitfalls of working in resource poor environments.
The course introduces a standardized and recognized approach to managing personal safety, communications and navigation in the humanitarian field, as well as an overview of individual and team risk management in complex environments. This course covers common dangers and hazards in various contexts, appropriate mitigation strategies, the development of security plans and procedures, and how to respond to incidents when they occur. Important elements of the course are the operation and use of communications and navigation equipment, risk assessments for operating in dangerous environments and personal safety strategies and mechanisms.
